Shino Garden Lantern

Dimensions:  11" h x 8" w                                                               sold

This piece was thrown on the potter's wheel, ribbed out from the inside with a throwing stick to create 4 corners and flatten the sides, scored with a serrated-edge metal rib on all 4 sides and allowed to dry to leather hard.  Drawings of the holes are made, which are placed according to the ribbed designs, and then carved out and finished.  The removable lid is thrown upside down to incorporate a flange that will fit inside the neck of the lantern.  The top of the lid is pulled out to approximately 1.5" larger in diameter than the base of the lantern.  When it is leather hard, it is turned right side up and trimmed, perforated and carved.

Red iron oxide is applied in brush strokes on the lid over an orange shino glaze.  It is then fired in reduction to 2400 degrees F in a propane-fired kiln.
